Amanda Mallasch in Finland

Shoulda told you this sooner, Amanda Mallasch went to Finland the beginning of August & will be there as a Rotary exchange student for her junior year of high school. She will be there for about one year and is enjoying her experience abroad. Amanda will be living with three different host families while she is there. Her current host family has a daughter about Amanda’s age. It’s a little tough not knowing the language, after one week of language camp, but everybody knows English. Amanda is making friends, learning Finnish, and going to school daily. She is particularly fond of the way they make potatoes.

No longer could I keep this exciting blog to myself, Amanda Porrey has an awesome blog, on which, she chronicles her life’s adventures. Her is an excerpt from her latest post.

We hiked through all kinds of vegetation and terrain. Sometimes we were in lush forest, sometimes we were surrounded by spaced out trees that had thinned out their leaves, and other times we were walking on the beach. At one point we got chased off the beach by high tide coming in much earlier than anticipated and had to do some crawling, struggling, sloshing up a steep embankment through the foulest smelling clay like mud. We stood on the point where Lewis and Clark saw the ocean for the first time, we explored old World War II bunkers at a campsite where we slept inside wood huts with bunks in them. Jessica Montgomery’s Semester In England

Jessica Montgomery Last year (2008) I spent the fall semester in England with a group of 18 Harding University students. We spent the first week and a half touring Ireland and Scotland. In Ireland we stayed at Trinity College in Dublin, and we toured Glendalough, a monastery in ruins.

In Scotland we stayed at a youth hostel in Stirling, and in a nice hotel in Edinburgh. We toured the Edinburgh Castle, ate at the Hard Rock Café, and went on night time ghost tours around the city. While in Scotland I tried a new food, Haggis. I still liked it after they told me what was in it.

Other things we saw in Scotland were the Wallace Monument, and Dune Castle. Dune Castle was used to film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. We also saw some guys in kilts playing bagpipes!

On our way to London we stopped at a few youth hostels, and saw a few towns, but mostly we slept on the bus, or watched out the windows of the bus.

Once we were in London, we settled in to out flats and started classes. The flats are owned by Florida State University, but they let other university groups stay there too. The flats were located only a block away from the British Museum where there are lots of cool things to see.

While we stayed in London we went on weekend and day trips every week or so. Some of the places we got to go were Stonehenge, Bath, Dove Cottage (the home of William Wordsworth), C. S. Some of the fun things we did in London were tours of St. Paul’s Cathedral, and Westminster Abby. We also did the London Eye, various museums, and ate at interesting restaurants like Wagamama’s, Pizza Express, and the Hard Rock Café, London. We also got to walk over the Millennium Bridge which you can see being destroyed in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. We saw A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Shakespeare’s Globe, and saw the musical Wicked.

On my own time I also went to some other musicals; Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, and Mamma Mia. I also went to Portobello Road, Camden Town market, and a wonderful Brazilian restaurant at the O2 Arena.

It was a wonderful adventure, and with as much as we did, there was still much left undone. I would gladly go again, and will if the opportunity ever arises.
