Jessica Montgomery’s Semester In England

Jessica MontgomeryLast year (2008) I spent the fall semester in England with a group of 18 Harding University students. We spent the first week and a half touring Ireland and Scotland. In Ireland we stayed at Trinity College in Dublin, and we toured Glendalough, a monastery in ruins.

In Scotland we stayed at a youth hostel in Stirling, and in a nice hotel in Edinburgh. We toured the Edinburgh Castle, ate at the Hard Rock Café, and went on night time ghost tours around the city. While in Scotland I tried a new food, Haggis. I still liked it after they told me what was in it.

Other things we saw in Scotland were the Wallace Monument, and Dune Castle. Dune Castle was used to film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. We also saw some guys in kilts playing bagpipes!

On our way to London we stopped at a few youth hostels, and saw a few towns, but mostly we slept on the bus, or watched out the windows of the bus.

Once we were in London, we settled in to out flats and started classes. The flats are owned by Florida State University, but they let other university groups stay there too. The flats were located only a block away from the British Museum where there are lots of cool things to see.

While we stayed in London we went on weekend and day trips every week or so. Some of the places we got to go were Stonehenge, Bath, Dove Cottage (the home of William Wordsworth), C. S. Lewis’ house (and grave), J. R. R. Tolkien’s grave, Hadrian’s Wall, and Hill Top Cottage (The home of Beatrix Potter, author of Peter Rabbit.)

Some of the fun things we did in London were tours of St. Paul’s Cathedral, and Westminster Abby. We also did the London Eye, various museums, and ate at interesting restaurants like Wagamama’s, Pizza Express, and the Hard Rock Café, London. We also got to walk over the Millennium Bridge which you can see being destroyed in Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. We saw A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Shakespeare’s Globe, and saw the musical Wicked.

On my own time I also went to some other musicals; Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, and Mamma Mia.  I also went to Portobello Road, Camden Town market, and a wonderful Brazilian restaurant at the O2 Arena.

It was a wonderful adventure, and with as much as we did, there was still much left undone. I would gladly go again, and will if the opportunity ever arises.

75th Birthday Bash for Jim Beckland & Cousins

IMG_2713Gloria & Ted Mallasch hosted a Surprise 75th Birthday Party for Jim Beckland.  The surprise was kind of on them, as their names appeared on the gorgeous birthday cake that Sadie Nicolas baked for the occasion.  Jerry Petersen’s name was also on the cake, despite the fact that Joyce & Jerry were in DC for a Navy reunion.  Jan Porrey’s name was added during the singing of Happy Birthday.  Jim was surprised to see so many of his relatives at the little cottage on Miner Lake.  I still don’t know how everybody fit inside, good thing everybody gets along so well.  In addition to the relatives, long time friend Bill Cook dropped in, he used to work with all of the guys at Uptown Electric, way back when.  A good time was had by all, Happy 75th Birthday!

Memorial to Joel Todd

meet_thy_GodThere is an 8-foot high sign along U.S. Highway 65/69 near the intersection with Scotch Ridge Road that was built in memory of Joel Todd of Carlisle, IA, who died in a 1995 tree-cutting accident at the age of 35.

Every day, the black and white sign along U.S. HIgHway reminds 20,000 motorists of a Christian message.  It says, on one side, “Christ died for our sins, 1st Corinthians 15:3.”  On the other, “Prepare to meet thy God, Amos 4:12.”  That’s it, in its 8-fopt by 12-foot entirety. No advertisements or group affiliations inscribed on either face.  And the people who built it: “They believe in Christ, is basically the story,” said Warren County Zoning Director Bob Folkestad.  …Well, that’s part of the story, anyway.

The other part is lesser known, and more personal to its creators.  The sign is a memorial.  “My son, Joel, died … in an accident,” said Avian Todd of Indianola.  “We put up the sign in memory of Joel.”  Joel Todd grew up in Indianola with his parents, Avian and George, and five siblings.  He lived at the farmhouse near the intersection of Scotch Ridge Road with his wife, Diana, until his death at age 35.  He was cutting a high-hanging tree branch in 1995 when the branch snapped and struck him in the head, knocking him out of a cherry picker.  “He had wanted for years to build that sign,” said Joel Todd’s widow, Diana Dear.  “My father-in-law wanted to honor his wishes.”
George Todd vowed to erect the sign.  He selected the Bible passages and chipped in $200 for materials.

Kevin Seiberling, owner of etc!graphics sign company in Carlisle, rented the farmhouse and designed the sign.  It’s been up for approximately eight years.  “It was a pleasure to put God’s word on the highway for people to see,” Seiberling said.  “I’m very happy to let people know that Jesus is the savior and spread that message as best as I am able, I would encourage others to do the same.”

Religious signage was in the central Iowa news last week, after an atheist group’s signs were pulled from Des Moines Area Regional Transit buses.  The ads sponsored by the Iowa Atheists and Freethinkers group read, “Don’t believe in God?  You are not alone.”  DART officials said they received several complaints about the ad; a few days later, Iowa Gov. Chet Culver called the sign offensive.  “I was disturbed, personally, by the advertisement and I can understand why other lowans were also disturbed by the message that it sent,” Culver told The Des Moines Register.  Unlike the bus advertisements, the Todds’ Christian-oriented sign has generated little or no public controversy.  There have been no complaints or comments about the sign or its message, said Kevin Middleswart, chairman of the Warren County Board of Supervisors.  “Anyone’s entitled to express their personal opinion, religious opinion or whatever,” Middleswart said. “It’s certainly not anything I could ever envision the county addressing.”

Folkestad, the zoning director, said county ordinance allows for the signage on private property.  But even if the zoning was in question, he’d be hesitant to cause a stir.  “The guy on the other side might win,” Folkestad said. “You don’t mess with God.”  Jon Todd of Indianola had an intense spiritual experience as he helped build his brother’s memorial.  Late one evening, he had helped pour three concrete bases for the signposts.  In those bases, he’d placed three wooden planks.  Finally, he had nailed a crossbar across the three posts.  The only remaining task was to hang the sign.  The sun was setting behind him.  That’s when it happened.  “There were three wooden crosses, cast in shadows, on the hill with the red sun behind,” Jon Todd said. “I knew, then, that God was looking over it.  There were three crosses when Jesus was put to the cross.”

Meanwhile, in addition to its sentimental value, the sign also fulfills its obvious purpose.  “Of course it’s meant to convert people,” Avian Todd said.  “Why would you put a sign up unless you meant to convert people?”  But Seiberling said none of them are the “real campaigners or parade marcher” types.  “The messages on the sign we fully and wholeheartedly believe,” Seiberling said.  “But we’re not so much the in-your-face type.  That’s what a billboard can be is, sort of, a silent messenger.”

Driving Magic is Magical for the Kids

driving magicHere is a picture of Malik (visually impaired) from CVI loving the feel of Schatzi, Schatzi seems to enjoy Malik’s loving too.

Here is what Driving Magic is all about as copied directly from their website, which can be seen by clicking here.  Driving Magic. Inc. began as a group of people with a passion for providing equine-assisted recreational therapy. All had been volunteers, board members and/or participants in therapeutic riding and carriage driving programs for 8-12 years. Because of the unique benefits of carriage driving for the disabled, especially for pre-teens through senior adults, and the limited availability for this type of service in Georgia we turned our passion into a business on July 1, 2004. Driving Magic, Inc. has five instructors certified by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association and an additional NARHA Instructor-In-Training. In 2005, we enhanced our services by offering work skills days for adults with developmental disabilities and an “Execs on the Farm” program which offers businesses the opportunity for team building events through volunteering with our program. And we began construction of a carriage driving-centric sensory integration trail in early 2007.

Thanks so much to the Lindskoog Family for donations to Driving Magic you have made in the past.  We’re having our 6th Annual BBQ and Auction fund raiser on November 14.  As you can imagine, the tight economy has made it difficult for us to raise enough funds to fully support the program and all it’s activities.  One thing that is extremely helpful to DMI, is horse sponsorships.  Funders tend to think of our horses as overhead expense rather than teaching aids — which is what they truly are and therefore it’s difficult to get funds to support their costs.  We can’t do what we do without our horses!  We’ve suggested that either individuals or family groups send a regular payment to DMI to sponsor the care of a horse.  The key here is “regularly scheduled” so that we know how to budget each month’s or quarter’s expenses.  It’s an idea that perhaps some of the family might consider and hopefully would not be a financial burden if done in a group.  Hopefully some would be willing to commit to a year or even an on-going basis.  Another alternative is “In Lieu of flowers” — rather than sending someone flowers in memory or honor, think of Driving Magic and make a donation to DMI.  You’ll see some  more ideas of simple ways to help Driving magic on page 3 of The Hitching PostDonations can be sent to Driving Magic, Inc., P.O. Box 279, Duluth, GA 30096. I will tell you that my experience working with people who have disabilities [as a NARHA  certified driving instructor] has given me such a sense of fulfillment and fun that I’ve never before experienced.  Nice to say when one is now 65 years old!!!  If you ever come to Atlanta we’d love for you to see DMI in action. If an ongoing contribution doesn’t seem to fit what the Lindskoog’s would like to do, I’m thinking that setting up a page for the Lindskoogs on yourcause.com would be another avenue.  If everyone sent to their distribution lists and each one contributed something toward a Lindskoog goal of say…$5,000 to fund a particular aspect of the program (e.g., our cost of delivering workshops to Hi Hope Center and Creative Enterprises) that would be a God-send.  FYI, Gwinnett County just pulled 100% of their funding for most of the Gwinnett County supported non-profits.  Hi Hope Center, a residential and day program for adults with moderate to severe developmental disabilities, depends on those government funds and now they have been completely yanked.  If we could raise the $$ to cover their cost (the tuition our participants pay represents <7% of the actual cost of delivering the services) and ours of hosting all Hi Hope and Creative Enterprises workshops annually, for example, that would benefit so many and be a ray of sunshine in the lives of adults who need it so much.  As I expressed to the non-profit CEO roundtable today (and had resounding agreement from my counterparts); adults with disabilities, especially those who are severe, are so forgotten when it comes to services and funding. They don’t look “cute” for brochures, they require so many more resources to provide services safely; those that are severe may even have behavioral aspects that can be difficult for our society to understand, whether it is spitting or lashing out or yelling or taking several minutes to process a single thought or sound. They don’t understand why they do those things either, but I have seen amazing results when services such as ours are used to build skills, encourage independence and empowerment, and enable these [young though senior] adults to feel a bit a freedom and fun.  Ok, now I’ll step off of my soapbox to say that any support the Lindskoog family can give to enable us to create even a few magic moments in the lives of our participants would be greatly appreciated.
Jennifer Lindskoog
Jennifer, Let us know when you’ve got the yourcause.com setup and I’ll let the Lindskoog Family & their e-mail distribution lists know, then it’ll be so easy to contribute, there’ll be no excuse at all.  Pat & Jennifer have been with Driving Magic Inc. forever, they work tirelessly to keep this most worthwhile program going, all they’re asking from us is a little bit of money, hard to imagine asking Swedes for money, but all kidding aside, tell your friends & family how they can make a difference, by donating to Driving Magic Inc.  I feel honored to be connected to DMI through Pat & Jennifer, also to know that each of you will dig deep into your pockets, where the big bills are, and send some money down south today.

Atlanta A’s Doing A-Okay

AndersonWe’re all fine in Atlanta. Andy and I are busy raising two great kids. Annika is now 4 and in preschool. Anderson is 2. They are both at such fun ages. We’re really enjoying them. Given Matt (brother) and I only live about 20 minutes from one another, our kids get to play together quite often and are all very close cousins. It’s a joy to have family so nearby. My mom (Pat Tresness) gets to see all of us all the time too which is nice. My dad (Jim Lindskoog) is doing great too. I’m working a little bit-still as a speech therapist. I’m doing all that my schedule allows given the kids are still so little. It Annikaallows me to work, but also be a full time mom, which I feel so fortunate to do. Andy is still practicing anesthesia at the big children’s hospital in Atlanta. All is going well for us.

3 Day Cancer Walk Thank You

lizHello Everyone ………

First off, I would like to thank you all for helping make my first 60 mile, 3-day walk a complete success. With your help, the Michigan 3-day raised almost $5 million towards a cure for cancer.
Let me take you through a short recap of our journey ….

Day 1, August 14 – Starting point – The Henry Ford Museum, Dearborn. We checked in, and enjoyed a very touching opening ceremony, which gave us all a kick-start to the day. We began our walk at 7:00. Day one took us through neighborhoods of Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Redford, then to camp in Livonia. Day one was very exciting, as many residents and businesses were out and about giving us their support. Superior Ambulance Company traveled along our route, blasting fun music and cheering everyone on. As the afternoon arrived, the temperature was up in the 90’s. It was hot, hot, hot! I never drank so much water and Gatorade in my life! There were various “pit stops” along our way where we could sit down, rest, and refuel our canteens. There was also medical staff available if needed, and food and snacks to keep you going. We never sat for too long, just enough time to check our feet for blisters and munch on some goodies – then we were on our way again. We finally made it to camp, around 3:30 p.m., where dinner was waiting. We were all so hot and tired, we couldn’t even eat. My teammates were headed to their tents for a nap, while I was headed to my air conditioned hotel room, with a nice whirlpool bath, cool shower, and comfy bed – my daughter, Brianna, decided to join me at my camp after discovering her tent was about 100 degrees. We each took a nice, long, cool shower, then went to bed around 7:00 …..

Day 2, August 15 – We awoke at 4:00 a.m., rested and ready for day two. We drove to camp, met our teammates at breakfast, and were in line ready to walk by 6:30. Day two took us through parts of Livonia and Plymouth – Day 2 was so much fun! There were people everywhere handing out drinks, food and, best of all, popsicles © Another great gift was baggies of ice – we would shove them on our bodies anywhere why would go – it made the heat so much less intense. Downtown Plymouth was the best! The entire town was decorated for the 3-day, they dyed the town fountain pink, and there were hundreds of people lining the sidewalks and streets cheering us on and giving their support. It was very emotional, and they made you feel like celebrities walking down the red carpet. Residents of Plymouth decorated their houses and lawns, and were camped out on their lawns handing out food, drinks, and even 3-day beads and trinkets. By” the time we made it back to camp, around 3:00, we were all loaded down with all the gifts handed out. Before dinner, we went to the mail tent to see who sent us cards and letters of encouragement. It was nice to be remembered, and it brought a little bit of home to camp. After dinner, which we all were able to enjoy that night, we all went to our “camp tents” (ha ha) to get a good rest for day three.

Day 3, August 16 – Again, we awoke at 4:00 a.m., rested and ready. We met our teammates at breakfast, and we were all feeling pretty good about day three. Since the walking route had changed, we were all bussed to Ann Arbor to begin our journey for day three. We were lucky to be in one of the first few busses that left, and were lucky because some of the busses took the wrong exit and got lost on their way to the starting point. So, we were four of the first 200 to start off day three. This day took us through the University of Michigan campus and surrounding neighborhoods. Day three was quite uneventful, as the Ann Arbor residents were no where to be found. Oh well, it was a peaceful, quiet 20 miles, which led us to the finish line on the property of Washtenaw Community College. There, we had such a reception from fellow walkers, 3-day crew and others who just came to celebrate with us.

The walk was certainly challenging, but something I, personally, am very proud of completing with only two blisters, sore muscles and a sun burn. I finished day three as walker number 207, with my teammates right behind me at 208 – 210, out of the 1800 who walked. We had three hours to rest at the “holding” area before closing ceremonies. It was nice to see family and friends come to give their support as we waited. We took that last ‘/2 mile walk to closing ceremonies, celebrated with all our fellow walkers, and were ready to go home!!!!!

It was an honor to walk in memory of my mother, and for all those who suffer from this disease, no matter what form. I truly appreciate everyone’s support during the months prior to the walk – all your donations, prayers and thoughts were more than I could have ever asked for. I hope you enjoy the short glimpse of the walk I have made for you – it is a very small “thank you” for all you have done .

With sincere thanks, hugs & kisses    ~ Liz ~
