You might know our dad as Bob, but in our family he is known as Gramps or Feeze. No one is quite sure where Feeze came from, but someone said it once and it just stuck. Anyone who knew my dad knows that he always loved a good nickname.
Our dad was born on April 16th 1938 to Herb and Eva Miller and has two sisters Gloria and Joyce. He was the baby of the family. He was a good kid growing up but was always a little mischievous and stayed that way……well…. Through his mid 80’s. He grew up in Chicago where he attended Lane Tech High School. After High School He became an electrician and worked at Corkill Electric where he eventually became a general manager. He did this despite being told to be anything OTHER than an electrician due to his grades in electrical shop class. A few years after high school he made the BEST decision of his life. He attended a carnival in Niles with his best friend Tom Russo. YES, a carnival, where else would you go to find your future wife? It was there where he saw our mom carrying a giant stuffed animal that her brother Tom had won. The bear and my mom were what caught my dad’s attention, ( So thank you Uncle Tom for winning that bear). That night He walked up to mom and struck up a conversation. After hanging out and talking for a while he thought she might be someone he wanted to date. She had a great time as well but didn’t think there was a future since he didn’t ask her out at the end of the night. Lucky for him, during their conversation that night she had mentioned that she worked in the electrical department at Sears. It was meant to be! Within a few days he visited her at her work…. not just once…. but twice. Nowadays that could be considered stalking but really it was the start of THEIR story. She found him funny and good looking but was tired of waiting for him to ask HER out, so she asked him. The rest, is history. Bob and Loretta were married a few years later. They have been inseparable ever since whether at someone’s sporting event, school activity, Door County, or any casino within 250 miles, they were always together. My dad was a patient and supportive husband, this was especially true at restaurants. If you have ever been out to dinner with the two of them you know what I am talking about. A table Not too close to the bathrooms, kitchen, or under a fan. Dad would wait patiently through several table changes until mom had just the right spot. AND OH WE CAN’T FORGET THOSE FAMILY GATHERINGS where he waited patiently for those Lally goodbyes which funny enough now we refer to as Miller goodbyes.
Feeze was a wonderful husband and dad. He loved us unconditionally and was always joking, laughing, coaching, and playing with us growing up. He always made time for us and was often found after work shooting hoops, playing catch, or just hanging out with us. He never said no and He always made it a point to make us a priority. He attended all of our games, performances, and special events. As a dad he rarely got upset, and to be honest with the three of us he had every right to. Like the time one of us hit the house with the car, and by one of us… I mean not me. But instead of getting upset he just brought out a plunger to fix the dent. Nothing was really said, except be careful next time. He never had to say too much , we just always understood. He was supportive and protective of his family. Not a helicopter parent, but one that was protective BEHIND the scenes. If we started a new job he had it scoped out before our first day. If we needed directions he had us covered. Although it was usually….. You know just make a right at the Amoco station and Left at the BP, then straight for a while…But he always got us to where we needed to go. Whenever we needed something fixed he was there for us….Usually with a roll of duct tape…According to him, it fixed everything. He was our go to person and we could always count on him.
In later years he took on a new role, that of Gramps. That is what all the grandkids called HIM, but when we were together as a family he called them by all sorts of nicknames like gang, creeps, or rat finks …Told you he loved a good nickname! Through the 31 years of being gramps his energy, enthusiasm, and joy of hanging out with them never changed. He didn’t spoil his grandkids in the traditional way, instead he spoiled them with his time and attention. He loved watching them whether on an athletic field or on stage. In fact he always joked that he was going to be their agent when they hit it big. As you can tell the grandkids always kept him busy and he wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.
One place that all the grandkids loved to be with gramps was Door County. Our mom and dad called it magical Door County because they would always say the weather was beautiful. The grand kids called it magical because each family got to spend a week up there each summer with grams and gramps. It was there that you would find him giving them the knee crab, golfing, or in the pool having noodle fights, or maybe a game of Racko where if he won he would YELL RACKOROONIO!! And even once in a while he would have tea parties on the patio where he would imitate a little old waitress by saying Don’t be Nervous with your Service while shaking the tea cups. The kids said It was always the small things he did and the way he always wanted to have fun.
I think that is the way he lived his life. He always wanted to have fun! He never took life too seriously. He would tell us all the time that everything has a way of working out and that there is nothing to worry about. He taught us so many lessons, sometimes with his words but more with his actions.
You are going to be missed Feeze! Although we can’t fix the hole from you being gone with duct tape We will always hear your laughter and remember the best times with you! We know you are looking over and protecting us! And we love you!
